Note: Beginning June 14 2011, Adobe AIR is no longer supported for desktop Linux distributions. Users can install and run AIR 2.6 and earlier applications but can't install or update to AIR 2.7. The last version to support desktop Linux distributions is AIR 2.6. AIR 2.6 is available from the AIR Archive.
Why did Adobe decide to discontinue further support for Adobe AIR for desktop Linux®?
As the market shifts to mobile devices, Adobe is investing in bringing its runtime technologies to new hardware and operating systems. Adobe is increasingly investing in mobile authoring. The recent Creative Suite 5.5 release is focused on enabling customers to deliver their experiences across devices using Adobe's technologies. Adobe has responded to the changing market trends by providing AIR support for a growing number of platforms. These platforms include Android, iOS and BlackBerry Tablet OS, televisions, and set-top boxes. Lifetime AIR for Linux desktop downloads represent less than 0.5% of total AIR desktop downloads, which number over 450 million. Therefore, Adobe has decided to change the distribution model for Linux and direct these resources toward its mobile efforts. Adobe's efforts are focused on supporting operating systems that are most important to its customers, and that demonstrate the greatest opportunity for future growth for its partners and developers. Adobe continues to provide partners the opportunity to license source code through the Open Screen Project. You can download AIR 2.6, the last version to support Linux, at the archive build page.
Adobe no longer supports the full AIR developer SDK for desktop Linux implementations. And, the AIR Debug Launcher (ADL) is no longer supported in the SDK..
64-bit binaries of AIR are not currently available. Running 32-bit AIR on 64-bit systems has not been fully tested. However, Adobe expects 32-bit AIR to run on these systems if they have the required 32-bit libraries and packages installed. The following instructions describe how to install AIR 1.5 on the 64-bit versions of Ubuntu 7.10, 8.0 and 9.04, Fedora 8 and 10, and openSUSE 11.
For certain Adobe AIR applications, make sure that kwallet/keyring is enabled and running on your machine.
Adobe AIR 1.5 for Linux is available here: http://get.adobe.com/air/.
- Packages - lib32asound2 lib32gcc1 lib32ncurses5 lib32stdc++6 lib32z1 libc6 libc6-i386
- Other libraries - libnss3.so.1d libnssutil3.so.1d libsmime3.so.1d libssl3.so.1d libnspr4.so.0d libplc4.so.0d libplds4.so.0d
The steps below specify the sources of these packages and libraries.
No manual installation workarounds are required. By default, AIR works fine on the 64-bit version of Fedora 8.
To install AIR 1.5 on Fedora 10, perform the following steps:
Install AIR 1.5 on 64-bit Ubuntu 7.10, 8.04, and 9.04
To install AIR 1.5 on Ubuntu 7.10, 8.0 and 9.04, manually install the 32-bit files by following these directions:
- Install the 32-bit binary files using the getlibs utility, which is available here: http://frozenfox.freehostia.com/cappy/getlibs-all.deb. This utility helps you install 32-bit applications on 64-bit systems by downloading and installing the required libraries.
To use getlibs to install the AIR 1.5 libraries, enter the following commands on the terminal. This command installs the following packages: lib32asound2, lib32gcc1, lib32ncurses5, lib32stdc++6, lib32z1, libc6, and libc6-i386. These libraries are required for resolving common user reported keyring issues (tweetdeck showing blank screen or apps not connecting to the Internet, and so on).
- Install the 32-bit versions of libnns and libnspr, which are available here:
- libnss3:
http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/n/nss/libnss3-1d_3.12.0~beta3-0ubuntu1_i386.deb - libnspr4:
http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/n/nspr/libnspr4-0d_4.7.1~beta2-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
- Open the packages you downloaded by running file-roller as root so you can extract them to your /usr/lib32 folder. Begin by extracting the files in libnss, using the following command:
- Double-click the data.tar.gz file. If the data.tar.gz file doesn't automatically open in file-roller. You are sometimes asked which application to open it with. If you are prompted to choose the application, enter file-roller in the Application box and click Open.
- In file-roller, locate and select the following files in the ./usr/lib folder:
- libnss3.so.1d
- libnssutil3.so.1d
- libsmime3.so.1d
- libssl3.so.1d
- Click Extract. Click the upper-left button in this window. The button's icon is an image of a pencil and paper. If you hover your mouse over the button, it displays 'Type a file name' in a pop-up tool tip. After the button has been clicked, a Location box appears. Type /usr/lib32 in the Location box and click Extract.
- Extract the files in libnspr, using the following command:
- Double-click the data.tar.gz file and open with file-roller and then locate and select the following files in the ./usr/lib folder:
- libnspr4.so.0d
- libplc4.so.0d
- libplds4.so.0d
- Follow the same instructions as above (in step 7) to extract the files to the /usr/lib32 folder.
- Finally, close file-roller and enter the following commands:
- You are now ready to install Adobe AIR Linux. Type the following command:
- Just one more step before you start installing and using AIR apps. Enter the following command:
Due to the absence of the lib32nss package, AIR apps are unable to connect to the network. Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit users require the package lib32nss-mdns for DNS resolution in a 32-bit application:
You're now ready to install and run AIR applications.
To install AIR 1.5 on 64-bit OpenSUSE 11, manually install the 32-bit files by following these directions:
- If you attempt to run the AIR installer (./AdobeAIRInstaller.bin), you receive the following error:
'Error loading the runtime libxml2.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.' - Instead, select Install Software from the Start menu in the desktop user interface (you can skip auto refresh).
- Search for and then install the following files:
Click Apply to complete installation of these packages.- Search for libxml.
- Select libxml2-32 bit from the list and click install.
- Search for libnss3.
- Select mozilla-nss-32 bit from the list and click install.
- Search for libnspr4 .
- Select mozilla-nspr-32bit from the list and click install.
- Search for libxml.
You're now ready to install and run AIR applications.
